# Can I Resize My Engagement Ring?

## I need to resize my engagement ring!

It's a common question (or problem in some cases). It is entirely possible you got the wrong size engagement ring or maybe you don't know her size at all and its a total gamble. The good news is that the vast majority of engagement rings ***CAN*** be resized. However, rings that have gemstones on the entire band (for example, an eternity band) usually can’t be resized. Eternity bands just don't have enough exposed metal available for a jeweler to work on. In this particular ring buying scenario, it is crucially important to know your partner's ring size before you but a ring with this type of setting.

It’s also usually impossible for a jeweler to resize a tension ring. This type of ring has a diamond or other gemstone held in place by pressure from the two ends of the ring. Most of the time, this type of ring needs to be custom made to provide a perfect fit. There are also limits on how much a ring can be adjusted. Normally, you can adjust a ring up to two sizes smaller or larger. Beyond this, the risk of damaging the ring and affecting the diamond (or another gemstone) setting increases.

### Why resize my ring?

Your reasons for resizing your ring could be one of many. For example, some people do it because of weight loss or weight gain when the band becomes too loose or tight. In some cases, people may want to wear their ring on a different finger due to life events, ring upgrades, or whatever the case may be. Whatever the reasons are, you should feel good about the fact that resizing is a very common procedure and can be done on most types of rings. But not all...

In all cases, especially if you're not sure, seek professional advice and always consult a jeweler* *if you really need to resize your ring.

### Types of rings that cannot be resized

Unfortunately, there are some types of rings that can't be resized. If one of these beauties is on your hit list, best make sure you know the exact size before purchasing.

#### Tension rings

Diamonds in tension settings aren't mounted in prongs; rather, they're held in place by a perfect pressure. [Tension rings also need to be custom-made](https://gittelsonjewelers.com/custom-jewelry-design/). If resized, the structural strength that holds the diamond in place is compromised.

#### Eternity bands

Eternity rings have a circle of small pavé stones all around the ring. These rings are custom-made and almost impossible to resize. Doing so will damage the perfect continuity of the stones.

#### Stainless steel, titanium or tungsten rings

These materials cannot be resized because they're too hard to work with. It's popular to see many men's wedding bands made from these metals, so when you order one, make sure you know your size.

### Harder to resize - not impossible

#### Rose gold rings

Rose gold comes in many different tones (some redder, and some more gold). Jewelers may not be able to match the exact tone of your ring. It's best to go back to the same retailer for resizing. Rose gold is also a much more delicate metal, so it can crack or have structural issues during resizing.

#### Pave or channel set rings

Some of these rings have the little stones going almost all the way around the band. If there is a little bit of plain metal at the bottom, it can be resized, but to a very limited degree. This is a risky one... It's easier to go up a size in these cases. But go to a [very skilled jeweler](https://www.instagram.com/gittelsonj/) because the stones can become misaligned.

#### Delicate gemstones

If your ring is mounted with a gemstone or has small gemstones in the band, they may need to be taken off during resizing and reset. Gemstones are more sensitive to heat than diamonds. The cost to reset gemstones could be higher due to this.

## How much does it cost to get a ring resized?

Well... every engagement ring is different so there really is no set cost for getting your engagement ring resized. In most cases, the jeweler that you use to purchase your engagement ring will offer a resizing service free of charge. Some jewelers offer guarantees or warranties. Some family-owned jewelers may have unique programs catered to your purchase. For example, at Gittelson Jewelers any engagement ring purchase includes one free sizing to accommodate the "I don't know my partner's ring size scenario".

If you are worried about the fit of your partner's engagement ring, it is worth asking your jeweler about resizing costs and warranty coverage before you buy. In any event, resizing a ring may spur you to consider addressing these questions or categories to have a better grasp of your project time and cost.
