# Designing a Custom Engagement Ring: Connor and Lauren’s Story

When [designing a custom engagement ring](https://gittelsonjewelers.com/custom-designed-jewelry/), the choice of color for the stones or metals can significantly impact the final aesthetic. Whether you want a traditional clear diamond or a unique gemstone that carries special meaning for you and your partner, color can bring a distinctive flair that standard rings might lack. Considering the hue of the metal band is also essential, as it can complement or contrast with the stones, creating a cohesive and attractive design.

## The Couple's Proposal

Connor and Lauren met in Duluth during their freshman year at college. The story has many twists and turns, college degrees and couple's experiences along the way, but Gittelson Jewelers came in for the most important piece.

While spending some time during the warm summer months on the [North Shore of Minnesota](https://northshorevisitor.com/), Connor and Lauren were staying at a Lake Superior resort. One beautiful evening they walked down the shoreline to take in the sunset with cocktails in hand and eventually Connor decided the time was right to get down on one knee - just himself, his girlfriend Lauren, God, and the Superior Sea - and he proposed to her. Just like a fairytale dream.

## Selecting the Perfect Gemstone and Setting

Once Connor fell in love with a gorgeous genuine-mined cushion-shaped diamond that he viewed in our store, the work towards the perfect custom engagement ring began. We had to figure out how to set this loose diamond in a custom-designed engagement ring setting that would personify how important his future fiancé Lauren is to him! Since he had loose ideas of how to design around this ring, we opted initially for a phone call to discuss the minutia, the tiny details, and the design concepts that were floating around in Connor’s head.

Translating those details to highlight the gorgeous cushion-shaped diamond he selected is where custom design is the driver behind the soon-to-be masterpiece!

### The Inspiration Behind Connor and Lauren's Unique Ring

I was able to gather that Connor was looking for a ring design with movement and some unique diamond shapes. It’s very common to see various sizes of round diamonds that surround the center diamond in various designs, but he was definitely looking for more unique angles and elongated shapes. Shapes like those that the marquise diamonds offer. Marquise diamonds, with their reminiscent ‘football’ shape, have sharp points on the ends with a curved table. The mix of 90-degree angles and soft curves of this diamond shape offers a really unique juxtaposition to the soft curves and busy faceting pattern of the center cushion shape. After some discussion between us about asymmetrical vs. symmetrical designs, we were able to come back with the first custom rendering that shows his exact cushion shape diamond set amongst the marquise and round diamonds.

## Collaborating with the Jeweler: Bringing Ideas to Life

Connor’s center diamond is very symmetrical - almost a perfect square in length x width millimeter dimensions. We really wanted to highlight that and continue to bring symmetry to the design and keep his center cushion-shaped diamond as the focal point. That’s why we opted to put the side marquise diamonds at mirror-image 45-degree angles to frame up his center diamond. The rounds capping the diamond design on either side are smaller in size and help to bring movement from right to left, diamonds ascending and then descending in size which is really pleasing to the eye and helps the entire custom ring design flow smoothly from end to end.

Additionally, the diamonds are set in a cathedral style which elevated them off the finger to leave plenty of room for a wedding band of Lauren’s choice once they set their wedding date!

After discussing all of these design points with Connor, we both agreed that this custom design rendering was the one that encapsulated everything he was looking for in terms of his future wife’s engagement ring!
