What Is Diamond Shape?

Diamond shape refers to the geometric appearance of a diamond. Every diamond shape has its own attributes and cut specifications, which also play a large factor in the overall look of the stone. Diamond shapes are categorized into two groups: round diamonds and fancy shape diamonds. Round diamonds, also known as round brilliant cuts, are the most traditional diamond shape. Fancy shape diamonds refer to any diamond that is not a round brilliant.

Here are some of the most commonly requested diamond shapes.

Princess-cut Diamonds

Invented in the early 1960’s by Arpad Nagy, the “princess cut” was originally called the “profile cut”. Princess cut diamond engagement rings possess the same brilliance as a round diamond but in a sleek square shape.

Beloved for its contemporary style and sparkle, the princess cut is the most popular fancy shape diamond. Princess-cut diamonds are square modified brilliant cuts with pointed corners. Boasting over 50 chevron-shaped facets, this cut is defined by exceptional fire and scintillation.

Cushion-cut Diamonds

The cushion cut diamond (once referred to as old mine cut) combines a square cut with rounded corners, much like a pillow (hence why also traditionally referred to as the “pillow-cut diamond.”)

While generally less brilliant than round brilliant diamondscushion cut diamonds often have better fire, which is part of their appeal.  Rounded edges soften the corners of this square or rectangular-cut diamond. Oval Diamonds

The oval shape is an elegant combination of the round brilliant cut and the marquise diamond. This brilliant cut features shimmering facets that make the light dance. Oval diamonds have the added advantage of an elongated shape, which can create the illusion of greater size. The slender shape can also make the finger of the wearer appear longer and slimmer, an effect often desired.

This sophisticated and unique shape of diamond is for the wearer who wants to express their individuality and match their sense of fashion and style.

What Is The Difference Between Diamond Cut and Diamond Shape?

Diamond cut and diamond shape are not the same thing. Often times, people can be confused by this or inter-change these terms. A diamond’s cut determines how its facets interact with light. A shape describes the geometric appearance of a diamond.

Cut defines what the shape of a rough diamond will be – not the other way around.
